BMW G90 M5 Lowering Springs Installed – Cobra Suspension Upgrade

The BMW G90 M5 represents the next generation of BMW M performance; blending supercar power with luxury and everyday usability. While the factory setup is impressive, many owners look to refine the car’s stance to better match its aggressive design. The addition of these springs also further aids in hiding the frowned upon weight of the new M5.

This blog showcases the process, results, and why this upgrade is one of the most popular suspension modifications for modern BMW M cars.

Why Install Lowering Springs on your BMW G90 M5?

From the factory, the BMW G90 M5 sits slightly higher to suit all customers. While practical, this can leave excess wheel arch gap that takes away from the car’s aggressive styling.

Lowering springs are ideal for owners wanting a subtle OEM+ upgrade without moving to full coilovers and still taking full advantage of all drive modes as the dampers are left in place allowing their versatility to still be made use of.

Below is a detailed report of how we installed Cobra Lowering Springs to this Marina Bay Blue G90 M5.

Before lifting the vehicle, we first created access to the rear top mount area while the M5 was still on the ground. This step requires the rear doors to be fully opened and allows us to work cleanly and safely without any risk of door dings once the car is on the ramp.

Once access to the rear topmount was made, the vehicle was raised and all four wheels were removed. While this comes down to personal preference, we always work front to rear.

Front Suspension Removal

At the front of the G90 M5, the driveshaft bolt and upper control arm were carefully removed and separated. We then detached all brake lines and associated wiring from the strut assembly to ensure nothing was placed under tension during removal.

With the strut fully isolated, the droplink, top mount bolts and fork bolts were removed, allowing the complete strut assembly to be taken out of the vehicle.

Spring Replacement

Once removed from the car, the factory spring was safely compressed to allow removal of the top mount. At this stage, the original BMW spring was replaced with the shorter Cobra Suspension lowering spring.

Reinstallation & Correct Torque Procedure

The suspension was then installed back onto the BMW G90 M5 in reverse order. Before final tightening, we preloaded all suspension bushes, a crucial step that is often overlooked but makes a significant difference to long term performance and reliability.

Why Do We Preload Suspension Bushes?

To prevent premature wear, tearing, and poor handling, because tightening them while the suspension hangs unloaded forces the rubber to twist or bind, putting it in a stressed, incorrect position for its entire life, leading to early failure, poor performance and possibly an increase in noise.

Final Result – OEM+ Stance Achieved

The result is a clean, aggressive OEM+ stance, with reduced wheel arch gap and a more planted appearance, all without compromising ride comfort or everyday usability.

The Cobra Suspension lowering springs complement the BMW G90 M5 perfectly, enhancing its visual presence while retaining the composure and performance expected from a modern M car.
